Wi-Fi Security Recommendations
Configuring a secure Wi-Fi passphrase is the first line of defense protecting your home network from eavesdropping and packet sniffing:
- WPA3 vs WPA2: If supported by your router, select WPA3-Personal (SAE). WPA3 replaces the 4-way handshake with Simultaneous Authentication of Equals, completely preventing offline dictionary attacks.
- Minimum Length: For home Wi-Fi networks, we strongly advise using at least 16 to 24 characters. Brute-forcing a 20-character randomized key would take billions of years even with modern GPU clusters.
- Disable WPS Immediately: Wi-Fi Protected Setup allows devices to join via an 8-digit numerical PIN. Flaws in the WPS protocol allow attackers to compromise the entire Wi-Fi password in just a few hours. Turn off WPS in your router's wireless security tab.
